My name is Joost, and I am a scientist and a developer. As a scientist my research interests are in the microbiology and virology field, whereas when I am wearing my developer hat, I enjoy making web-based applications with a variety of technologies.
Over the years I have done a variety of things, from working in a diagnostics laboratory in The Netherlands to investigating carnivorous sponges in the Canadian Arctic, but currently I am based in Italy and self-employed as a full-stack developer creating laboratory management software systems.

The background of this page is an electron microscope image showing a spicule of a deep-sea carnivorous sponge, found in the Arctic hundreds of meters deep. During my PhD I worked extensively with these sponges, using sequencing technologies to uncover what kind of bacteria they carry with them and how they may constitute symbiotic relationships.
Closer to the surface, I also used microbiome compositions to understand how aquaculture activities can impact the environment and what this may mean for a sustainable industry.
Finally, I find viruses fascinating! I was lucky to be able to work with some really smart people to develop several new laboratory methods and bioinformatics tools to discover and describe novel viruses from different environments.
Music is a big part of my scientific and programming career, countless hours of work accompanied by a wide variety of music. Here is a snapshot of some of my background music while coding.
